Mouli or Kalawa is a cotton red thread roll, considered to be very sacred and used in all religious purposes of the Hindus. The thread is used as an offering of cloth to the deity. The Mouli thread is an integral part of any puja. Normally the Mouli is tied around the Sadhana article, that is, Mouli is tied around a coppertumbler filled with water. On its mouth is placed five mango leaves and a coconut in a red cloth is place it over the mouth of the tumbler. This represents the shrine you are offering puja. Next, before the start of the puja, the red sacred thread is tied around the wrist of the members of the family.

The basic significance of wearing this thread is to get blessings from God.

A person oftenputs on the red thread on one’s wrist when doing a ceremony, ritual or puja, or for certain blessings. The thread helps preserve or imbibe those blessings when it is tied around one’s wrist during the ceremony.

 

 

Mauli or rakshasutra consist two colours i.e. red & yellow separately in various parts ofmauli. Yellow colours represent the spiritual energy, while red has theproperties to stimulate the spiritual energy. It protects the wearer fromnegative energy. It is also offered to deities during worship as Vastra (clothoffering).

 

The literalmeaning of mauli is 'above all'. Here the reference is to the head that standshigh. With the moon perched on top of Shiva's head, he is referred to asChandramauli. The practice of tying the thread dates back to the time whenVamana Bhagwan tied this holy thread on the wrist of the progressive King Balito grant him immortality.

The Moli is tied on the right hand of males and married females, and on left hand of unmarried females.

Cotton strings in form of yarn in full red are most common as is red with small bits of yellow , however , other dye combination exist . It sometimes has knots which are tied up while reciting sanskrit mantras to invoke brahmansis worn to ward off evil from the person who wear this moli threads .A stylished form of these moli calaba is used to tie upon rakhsa bandhan.

In hinduism's many scripts have many religious stories about moli and kalava.

In Mahabharat, dropadi tied a kalava on the right hand of abhimanyu before his last day of war for devine protection. He was not defeated by many warriors as long as he wore the pious thread.

Lord krishna wanted his death.Krishna thus sent a mouse to cut his moli and soon after. Abhimanyu was killed.

Another legend has it that Lord Vishnu during his incarnation as vamana tied a red thread on the hands of king Bali to grant him immortality and to rule the netherworld.
